Friend of the Mountains Award

On behalf of our residents, staff and Council I was pleased to accept the inaugural “Friend of the Mountains” award from the Friends of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The award was presented by the President of the group, Al VanHuyck, in recognition of the Town’s conservation easement on 1,271 acres protecting our reservoir and watershed. The easement is the largest and the first by a government in Loudoun County.

Prescription Drug Collection Program

Inova Loudoun Hospital provided residents of Purcellville and the surrounding community an outstanding opportunity to protect our environment by providing a free prescription drug collection program. This was the first such effort by Inova. We are thankful for their support and plan on having another such program in the Spring.

Washing machines: the new water savers?

Very interesting article about how the new water efficient clothes washing machines are very effective water savers. The Town offers a rebate up to $150 for the most water efficient washing machine and up to $100 for water efficient toilets. So far since last August residents and businesses have helped conserve more than 1 million gallons of water through our rebate program and other water conservation efforts.

Chapman-DeMary Trail Dedicated

Was pleased to join with a large crowd to help dedicate the Chapman-DeMary Trail. The trail is a great example of a community partnership. The Town working with Loudoun Valley High School, environmental organizations and the private sector have been able to preserve a 10-acre parcel of property that will be used as a trail. The conservation easement was donated by John Chapman with the easement held by the Town thereby protecting the property forever from development. John DeMary, an environmental studies teacher at Valley, has long utilized this property and the trail was literally built by John and his students. A win-win for all and another great example of why Purcellville is a great place to live and raise a family.

Town Tree Farm Initiated

I am pleased to report that the Town has initiated a tree farm on a parcel of property owned by the Town. The trees were planted by a young man working to earn his Eagle Scout badge. The ground was tilled by our Town staff and technical support was provided by our Tree and Beautification Commission. A true community effort.

The Eagle Scout planted 21 white oak tree saplings that were provided at no charge to the Town. The trees, which will mature in approximately five years, will then be used as part of the Town’s tree planting program. Additional trees will be planted in the tree farm was well.
